J.K. MooreThe Life & Times of James Kerr Moore: Indian Trader & Military Sutler

The life of James K. Moore, Sr., is intricately entwined with the early history of the Wind River Indian Reservation in Wyoming and what would become Fort Washakie, the U.S. Army post that was established on the reservation. The content of this website contains his biography, stories and events from the history of Fort Washakie, and numerous photographs. The photos, some taken by Moore, others by one of his sons and namesake, James K. Moore, Jr. (Evelyn Bell's father), present images of Indians, soldiers, and Fort Washakie from approximately 1883 through the 1930s. The Gallery Index contains sub-headings for the photographs, while Ft. Washakie Tales include anecdotes and stories about life at the fort.

A History of Shoshone-Bannock Indian Art: Continuity & Change in the Northern Rockies

Like most Indian peoples, the Shoshones of the Wind River Reservation in Wyoming and the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes of Fort Hall Reservation in Idaho have a long history of producing high quality art.  This website will explore various aspects in the development of Shoshonean artistry from the beginnings of the reservation period (1868) to the present.

Shoshone beadwork is well known on the contemporary powwow circuit, but the talents of numerous Shoshone artisans also includes basketry, games and toys, tools and weapons, hide paiting, and parfleche envelopes.  As in all cultures, their art reflected their environment and the contacts they had with other cultures.   Thus, art forms, materials, colors, patterns, etc., all changed and developed over time.  This website will explore these changes and also the continuities in Shoshone art.  But in order to do that properly, Shoshone voices must be included in the analyses. Thus, one of the more unusual and important components of this website will be the interviews to be conducted with Shoshone elders and beaders.  They will be shown the images that are included on this site and asked to comment on them and place them within a Shoshonean perspective.  Learn More >>
